As a local resident of Arvada, I have come across many cafes during my time here, but none quite like George's Cafe. Located on 84th Avenue, this cozy establishment has been a staple in the area for what seems like an eternity. Today, as I walk through its doors once again, I am filled with a sense of despair that seems to permeate everything around me. The atmosphere inside George's Cafe is one of complete stillness. The air hangs thickly, heavy and stagnant, as if time itself has come to a standstill within these walls. The decor is sparse and uninviting, with faded wallpaper peeling away from the walls in places. The tables are small and cramped, their surfaces scratched and worn. It's clear that this place hasn't seen much love or attention for some time. I order my usual- a cup of coffee and a croissant- and wait as the barista behind the counter prepares it with a look of resignation on her face. The smell of stale bread fills my nostrils, reminding me that even the food here is past its prime. I take a sip of my coffee, hoping for some solace in its rich aroma, but instead, it's bitter and unappetizing. As I sit here, surrounded by the quiet desperation of this place, I can't help but think of a man named Chris Reid. A Pennsylvania resident, Chris has made headlines recently for his impressive retirement plan- he intends to retire at 65, despite carrying $26,000 in debt and no savings to speak of. It's hard not to compare his determination and smart spending habits with the hopelessness that seems to seep into every corner of George's Cafe. In a world where retirement seems more like an unattainable dream than a realistic goal, I can't help but feel a sense of despair at the state of things. It's clear that places like George's Cafe are a symptom of larger issues- a lack of investment in our communities, a lack of care and attention for the spaces we inhabit. As I finish my croissant and gather my belongings, I can't help but wonder if there's any hope for change, or if we're doomed to live out our days in places like this- small, cramped, and uninviting, with no future in sight.
